Scientific Case

Electrical tree is a common ageing process in dielectrics under high electric field. The former method can only study the electrical tree in 2-D. 3D study can be realized with the help of XCT. What's more, XCT has a potential to be used in step by step test to study the tree initiation. However, X-ray is high energitic and would cause demage to the polymer. So it should firstly be verified that whether the X-ray used in scanning would cause damage to sample. This would be done by testing the mechanical strength of samples with or without X-ray exposure.

Experiment Design

The test is only to expose the sample under X-ray to cause damage. The sample is a modified tensile test sample made by epoxy resin with a size of 120mm*15mm*3mm. Only the central area with a size of 5mm *10mm *3mm needs to be exposed under X-ray. No scanning is needed in this test.
