The Rapiscan RTT110 (Figure 1) is an X-ray CT scanner designed to image airport baggage at 50Hz frame rates making it the fastest imager in the UK. It is capable of analysing articles as they are transported along a conveyor in real time through the instrument. Research at HMXIF is adapting this state of the art fast CT scanner, to do basic science, exploiting its fast acquisition ability to image processes including granular materials and two-phase flows. The large inner chamber (Figure 2) allows large bulky objects to be analysed (e.g. turbine blades, human sized fossils) with an equivalent resolution to medical X-ray CT or MRI systems but in a fraction of the time. Two sets of lead curtains are used to allow specimens to pass through the inner chamber for analysis while simultaneously protecting users from exposure to X-rays.

  • Ability to scan large samples: width 1.0m, height 0.75 m (D shaped samples) and depth 2.5 m
  • Image resolution of 1mm
  • The belt speed of the conveyor can be set from 0 to 0.5 m/s
