Members of our group who specialized in modeling flow, heat transfer, and reactions for industrial applications use FLUENT (ANSYS, PA, USA) as one of the simulation tools. It allows a combination of design, visualization and model optimization. FLUENT has advanced solver technology, which provides fast, accurate Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) results. For example, to model the blood/ Body Fluid flow behavior inside the human trabecular bone, FLUENT is used to solve Navier-Stokes Equation to obtain corresponding velocity field and fluid shear stress distributions. For more complex systems or to solve special problems, user-defined functions allow the implementation of new user models and the extensive customization of existing settings, e.g. specific materials properties, boundary conditions, etc. For example, one can import the user-defined fluid viscosity functions and some built-in commands to allow the simulation of polymer injections that has a variant fluid viscosity against injection time.

Our group uses FLUENT 6.3.26 CFD code to perform simulations of fluid flow behaviors, from incompressible to compressible flow, single phase to multi-phase flows. A wide range of applications including flow properties inside tissue engineering scaffolds and soils, simulations on heat transfer/ air flow behaviors in oil platform systems etc. Figure below shows an example of the CFD results obtained by the FLUENT code.
